Glossary
-
Dealer
- The dealer is the person who
shuffles
the cards and passes them out accordingly.
-
Discard
- A discard is required, because
in Euchre, each player can only have 5 cards. The general rule is
to discard the lowest
off-suit card,
unless discarding another card will cause you to be 2-suited.
-
Euchre
- A Euchre is the act of the defending
team winning 3 tricks.
Winning a Euchre earns the team 2 points.
-
Go Alone
- A player can go alone
if they feel their hand is strong enough that there is a chance
that the hand can take all 5 tricks and earn 4 points.
-
Kitty
- The kitty is the remaining
4 cards after the player hands are delt. The top card in the
kitty becomes the turned-up card and determines
trump. In some
euchre variations, the kitty
is turned face up, exchanged by
players, or is used in some manner to make the game more interesting.
-
Lead
- The lead card is the 1st card
played by the person who's turn it is. Once this card is
lead, it determines the suit which
the other players must follow.
-
Left Bower
- The left bower is the jack of the
suit that is the same color as the
trump suit.
It becomes trump and is the second highest trump card. For the
duration of the hand, a left bower
must be considered and played as if it is trump.
-
Off-Suit
- Off-suit usually refers to
a suit not
lead
. Off-Suit does not
usually refer to the trump suit.
-

- The right bower is the jack of the
trump suit. It is
the highest trump card.
-
Shuffle
- The act of shuffling roughly means
that you want to mix up the cards, while not looking at them and
keeping them facing all the same way while doing so.
- Trick
- A Trick refers to the 4 cards played,
one by each player, starting with the
lead. A
trick is won by the player
who had the highest
trump
suit (or the highest card of the suit
lead if no
trump was played).
There are a total of 5
tricks a hand.
- Trump
- Trump
is usually refering to the suit selected according
to the rules of the game. It is usually given special ranking
so that any card in the trump suit outranks all other non-trump cards.
-
Trump Full
- Trump-full
usually refers to a hand of five cards being all trump. If this
should happen, and you have a chance to make
trump, then it is usually
make trump, and possibly
go alone.
