Glossary
Dealer
The dealer is the person who shuffles the cards and passes them out accordingly.
Discard
A discard is required, because in Euchre, each player can only have 5 cards. The general rule is to discard the lowest off-suit card, unless discarding another card will cause you to be 2-suited.
Euchre
A Euchre is the act of the defending team winning 3 tricks. Winning a Euchre earns the team 2 points.
Go Alone
A player can go alone if they feel their hand is strong enough that there is a chance that the hand can take all 5 tricks and earn 4 points.
Kitty
The kitty is the remaining 4 cards after the player hands are delt. The top card in the kitty becomes the turned-up card and determines trump. In some euchre variations, the kitty is turned face up, exchanged by players, or is used in some manner to make the game more interesting.
Lead
The lead card is the 1st card played by the person who's turn it is. Once this card is lead, it determines the suit which the other players must follow.
Left Bower
The left bower is the jack of the suit that is the same color as the trump suit. It becomes trump and is the second highest trump card. For the duration of the hand, a left bower must be considered and played as if it is trump.
Off-Suit
Off-suit usually refers to a suit not lead . Off-Suit does not usually refer to the trump suit.
Right Bower
The right bower is the jack of the trump suit. It is the highest trump card.
Shuffle
The act of shuffling roughly means that you want to mix up the cards, while not looking at them and keeping them facing all the same way while doing so.
Trick
A Trick refers to the 4 cards played, one by each player, starting with the lead. A trick is won by the player who had the highest trump suit (or the highest card of the suit lead if no trump was played). There are a total of 5 tricks a hand.
Trump
Trump is usually refering to the suit selected according to the rules of the game. It is usually given special ranking so that any card in the trump suit outranks all other non-trump cards.
Trump Full
Trump-full usually refers to a hand of five cards being all trump. If this should happen, and you have a chance to make trump, then it is usually make trump, and possibly go alone.
