Assignment 3 - ABNIAC

ABNIAC
Due by midnight on February 2, 2001
Each one is worth 5 points total of 10 points. Note: If you do not send an email explaining how you sent the assignment, Brian will deduct 2 points.
Email versions are sent to Brian Lee at blee@cs.iupui.edu
Faxed (317-274-9742) or printed versions are to go to my Computer Science mailbox marked Lion

Notes: First, the Windows-only version of ABNIAC we have in the lab is a bit more trustworthy than the one you will find on the web, because the web version uses a language called Java which is relatively new and unproven. Secondly, you will probably want some help from an instructor on this one.

The assignment is this:

Go to a version of ABNIAC. The one on the web is at http://klingon.cs.iupui.edu/~aharris/abniac/java/ or go to the SL070 or SL247 labs where ABNIAC is installed.

You can also download and install the windows version of ABNIAC if you wish, at this location. You will need winzip, pkunzip, or a similar program to install this program. (Go here if you need to download Winzip.)

  1. Examine the 'message' sample program. Write a program like it that sends your name to the screen a letter at a time. (5 points)
  2. Examine the 'counter' sample program. By changing the values of only two cells, make the program count to 100 by fives. (5 points)
  3. OPTIONAL: Make a program that uses a loop (like counter does) to print out the first 10 letters of the alphabet. (+1 point)
  4. Send an email to my account stating that you had sent them, which parts you sent, and how you sent them (online java, faxed to CS office, etc.)

If you use the Windows version, print off each program and turn it in on paper to the CS office (ask to put it in Margaret Lion's. You may also Fax it to the CS Office. Make sure that your name, my name (Margaret Lion) and the class number (N241) are clearly noted on the cover sheet. The fax number is: (317) 274-9742 or you can drop it off in the Computer Science Department office.

If you use the Java version, use the email command to email each program to me. You must use Brian's CS email account: blee@cs.iupui.edu. Brian will not accept emails for this class from any other email account.

If you have trouble submitting this program, try just writing the numbers down that make up the program. As always, we just want evidence you did it. The way you get it to us is not that important.

Special thanks to Leanne Burrow, Andy Harris, Bob Molnar, Paula Trefun, and Jennifer Stewart for their input, inspiration, content, code, lessons, and giving me the opportunity to boldly going where I have never gone before. Thanks! - Margaret Lion
