Here are your March 200 notes.
March 27 - Howdy! If you have logged onto
Oncourse this morning you may have noticed another quiz. Yup you now have a
Month of March pop quiz. So go to Oncourse and take it. You may take it as
many times as you like - I will use the highest grade. It is only 3 questions
so it shouldn't take you very long. It is testing your ability to read and
comprehend what is on this website. :) I will take the test down on Saturday
morning and post your grades on Oncourse then. In the meantime, have fun with
your html work!! -Margaret
March 26 - IT'S DONE!!! Yes, my patient
students your grades are up!! At least that is what I am hoping. If you do not
see a grade for something that you have done, let me know and we can solve this
problem together!!
BTW (By The Way) your pages are looking good! And your final project ideas are
good too - make sure you check your comments on this one.
I am going to clean-up our class roster. In other words, if there is no link
to your website on the class roster I'm taking your name down.
I have noticed that some of your links don't always work. Ah me, but that is
a constant thorn in the side of web work. Please check your links and work
so that you will get the full credit for your work when we go to grade. Many
of you missed points due to no links or not having done your STAIR. Make sure
you get your assignment right and the links work and you will do very well.
And always, always, always check your work once it is up on the Web. -Margaret
March 24 - Hello!! I am in the lab today
with Ms. Ahnyka Spain and we are discussing Emacs!!! Ah yes, many of you will
feel that it is the bane if your existence. I did too when I first started
but now I love it for some good old quick editing.
Ok, here are some guidelines that I used for myself in teaching myself
Emacs so you can follow them too or make up your own to suit your learning
style:
- For this class I would suggest that first create your work in
Notepad and then edit your work using Emacs once it is posted to your
site. That way you can get your creativity going without worrying
about another set of commands/codes and you can play with Emacs
without the stress of creating.
- Right now I am editing your Information Central page using Emacs.
Why? Well if I didn't I would have had to have edited this work
on my home computer (60 miles away right now - Yikes!) and then
log into the Internet and ftp the file over to the phoenix server.
Whew what a lot of work!! But with Emacs, all I do is log into the
Internet, open this page in Emacs and away I go! Right Ahnyka?
Sure she said. (What a trooper!)
- BIG NOTE!! When you are in Emacs and suddenly all of what
you are typing is going wrong and Emacs is just doing crazy things
cause you typed in the wrong commands and now it is asking you for
your bloodtype what do you do?!?! Simple. Type Ctrl-g. That gets
you back to working on your document and you bet I've done that
many times!
- I would suggest that you don't try to learn all of Emacs right
away. Just make sure by the end of this class you can get in and
out of Emacs and do some simple editing like typing rambling
sentences like I am right now and you will be doing well. Breathe
deep. You will get this, just practice, practice, practice!
BIG NOTE!! For some reason the phoenix
server DOES NOT like capitals in the names of documents. I think it's a UNIX
thing. Therefore NEVER put capitals in the names of your documents and that
includes graphics.
ALSO!! Don't put spaces in the names of your documents as well. If you want
a space, say you want your documents name to be tables and frames, type in
the name as tables_and_frames. Whew!! Now that will save you a lot of
heartache down the road!! Thanks to Sims and Shunte for bringing that up in
lab today!!
Take care! - Margaret
March 22 - Hello and welcome back! I had a
GREAT vacation and I hope you all did too. Ok, now down to business:
- Some of you have been asking who do you submit the current and future
assignments to. Easy! All you do from now on is put your asssignments
on the Web. Brian and I will get to them to grade.
- Speaking of grades...yup, we're beind. I am hoping to get the grades
for your final project proposals and resumes up on this Satuurday.
- BIG CHANGE FOR YOUR FINAL!! The
CS department really wants you all to have Emacs abilities. So your
final exam is going to be changed to incorporate Emacs. Don't worry
about it now as I am still working on it but do know that I will
make for you an easier final - YES! - since you will need to be working
on your Emacs skills.
- In light of the previous list line, please all of you now go to your
Emacs tutorial. How do you get there? Simple! Telnet in using
Hummingbird (IUWARE) software (Emacs HATES Windows Telnet so DON'T
use it.) At your UNIX prompt type emacs and hit return. You will
find yourself at the Emacs menu. Read the top lines and you will
see that getting to the tutorial means you type Ctrl-h t. When
in Emacs, C always means Ctrl key. Take your time doing this and
please go through the whole thing. It will help you get an A and
help you in future CS classes.
And YES I'll be in the lab this Saturday!! -Margaret
March 8 - Welcome to
SPRING BREAK !
I hope you all enjoy yourselves as much as I am going to! Your grades will
be getting to you a little late but somehow I don't think you all will care.
See you all after the break when we resume the class again on the 19th.
-Margaret
March 5 - Hello! I hope you all had a good
weekend. Last week was great for me. My good friend at the Computer Science
Department, Jennifer Stewart, gave birth to a baby girl on my birthday!! And,
another friend and person you all know, Scott Orr, got a new baby daughter
last week as well! Both girls are doing fine. :)
I hope you all are looking at the code files under Notes in Class FAQs and
Notes. That will give you a lot of examples of good HTML coding.
Lab this Saturday? I won't be there as I will be in Albuquerque, NM. Yes
you can of course continue to email me - and HOPEFULLY - I will be able to
read it. As far as I know, Thursday night lab is still on this week.
Labs will resume after Spring Break. Hope yours is a good one.
-Margaret
AMENDED March 3 AMENDED - Hello and welcome to March! It is said that
March "comes in like a lion." I'm sure that co
uld be made to reference my name but I'm
just not sure how right now. :)
A few things you need to know about the past and upcoming assignment:
- From here on, the most important place you will constantly
be referring to on this site is the Notes section in the
Class FAQs and Notes. The Notes section will show you the
finished document using HTML AND the HTML coding in the same-
named text document. What you say? Just go to the Notes
section and start looking around. I found that to be the most
helpful section when I took this class.
- Many of you will begin your adventure into HTML with the resume
assignment. Please, please, please do not fret about how the
assignment looks. I am not expecting masterpieces here. Please
just do what you are supposed to do according to the assignment
(in other words, read it and do what it says) and make your
resume easy to read and you will do fine. Just look at mine.
My resume is NOT fancy but it fulfilled all of the requirements
and that is all it needed to do. You can see it at
resume
.html.
- From here on in your STAIRs can all be in text format. In other
words you do NOT have to make your STAIRs html documents. If you
want to, go ahead, but it is absolutely not necessary so you can
save yourself the time.
- Many of you have complained about the server not working
properly. Ah the joys of computers!! I sympathize. Please keep
working to get your proposal on the server and everything will be
fine.
- Don't forget that you can create your own banner graphics on the
web by going to www.
flamingtext.com. This is what I used when I made the banner
for my resume and I go there a lot for banners in general. You can
yes, of course, go to other sites on the web that do the same thing
and that is fine too. JUST REMEMBER TO CREDIT THEM!!
You will notice that this page is now shorter. All of the February notes are in the
februarynotes document listed below. You can link to it to reread things in February
you need to review.
I am looking forward to reading your Final Project Proposals. Take care and have a
good weekend. -Margaret

And now for the februarynotes.html!
Special thanks to Leanne Burrow, Andy Harris, Bob Molnar, Paula Trefun, and Jennifer Stewart for their input, inspiration, content, code, lessons, and giving me the opportunity to boldly going where I have never gone before. Thanks! - Margaret Lion
