February Notes - N241 Spring 2001

Here are your February notes that had been posted on the class site. I hope they are useful. -Margaret

February 24 - Wee hoo! Those of you who took the Mid-Term got good grades! No one got below a C! Way to go people! I am, however concerned that many of you have not gotten in all of your assignments. Please get those to me. Even if you will not get graded for the work you will at least have it done and will be ready to learn the next assignment.

We are now entering the FUN part of this class! We will now be doing good old HTML coding! Hooray!! From here on in you will be visiting the Notes part of the Class FAQs and Notes. There you will find examples of HTML coding that you will need to peruse in order to make your future pages. -Margaret

February 22 - Howdy!! Don't worry, you will be getting your Assignment #4 & 5 grades soon. It takes a very long time to grade this project and due to illness of an unsavory nature, I have not had the time to load the grades onto Oncourse. Fear not, you'll get them. In the meantime, have a good week and study for your Mid-Term. -Margaret

AMENDED - February 19 - AMENDED Howdy. Yes, I'm still sick and thanks to those of you who have wised me well. I think I'll live and hopefully continue to breath freely. Fingers crossed. Now on to business...

Here's how to study for the Mid-Term:

  1. Go to Assignments and select Mid-Term.
  2. Answer all of the questions in the Mid-Term study guide and you will be ready for the Mid-Term.
  3. The Mid-Term will be on Oncourse starting on February 23rd at 9 am. and will no longer be accessible after February 24th at 9 am. That gives you 24 hours to complete the Mid-Term so that should give you plenty of time.
  4. Yes, you should be able to view your score after you have submitted the exam. That is how I have set it up so unless I did something wrong, you should be able to figure-out how well you did.
  5. There is no time limit to taking the exam but please don't stay on line all day as that messes it up for other people to access.
  6. AMENDED - The Mid-Term is multiple choice. - AMENDED
  7. Remember: If you do the study guide you will get an A!
Good luck! I know you will all do well! :) -Margaret

February 17 - Ok, so I'm sick as a puppy and so sick I can't even sleep. Thank goodness for television and the Web!! So here are the notes for the day:

  1. Please wish Mr. Lee a happy birthday. His email is: blee@cs.iupui.edu. I just couldn't resist this, he needs lots of birthday wishes. :)
  2. You will notice that this page is now way shorter. I took all of the January postings and put them on a separate page. If there are things you want to review from January, just select the link at the bottom of the page and you will be able to read all of the old message. Oh and if you haven't read them all, DO SO NOW!
  3. Your Midterm will be ready for you to take on Oncourse from 9 am. Friday, February 23rd to 9 am. Saturday, February 24th. Yes I am giving you more time than listed on the study guide, but hey, you deserve it.
  4. If you have not done your Oncourse quiz which I asked you to do on the February 15th posting (see below) do it soon. You need to be able to access Oncourse in order to take your Midterm. Accessing Oncourse is IN YOUR HANDS so get used to using it NOW so you won't get a 0 on your Midterm because you couldn't log into it.
  5. Previously this site was not happily viewed by IE when on an Apple. Yes, I know you all should be using Netscape, however, if you do use an Apple please give the site a try with IE to see if it now works. I made the site shorter and I am hoping that is what caused the problems.
Take care. I know I need to. -Margaret

February 16 - Hey. Well students I am quite sick. Sigh. So I will definately NOT be at lab tomorrow. Hopefully Mr. Brian Lee will be there for me so he can help you.

And speaking of Mr. Lee:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRIAN!!

Mr. Lee will be celebrating his birthday this Saturday so if any of you go to the lab, you had better wish him well!! Thanks. -Margaret

February 15 - Hello! I hope you all had a happy Valentine's Day as I sure did! So now on to some class announcements:

  1. The Mid-Term WILL BE ON ONCOURSE! So get on it now and try out the quiz I told you about (read below) and take it so you know how to manipulate Oncourse. It is up to you to get this to work for you so jump on it now.
  2. I have a slight cold so I may not be in lab this Saturday. Fear not, there should be someone there to help you.
  3. The below Happy Valentine's Day graphic was made at www.flamingtext .com. Go there for some great stuff!!! FlamingText
Take care! -Margaret

February 13 - Here is a BIG TEST for all of us! I have just created my first quiz on Oncourse! And yes, that is right - now you get to take it!! It is a VERY SIMPLE three question test. It's primary purpose is to see if we can successfully do test taking with Oncourse thus saving all of us time and energy for the big midterm you will be taking next week. :) So, go to your Oncourse account and select Tools, then the test part and take the Oncourse Usage Test. It must be taken by Sunday, February 18 at Midnight or you won't get any points for it. -Margaret

AMENDED - February 10 - AMENDED Hello! Ok BIG announcement here. I have been going over your pages while in lab and although the majority of you go the assignment up and working, many of you didn't. Ok, it's a tough assignment SO I will give you all another week to get it up. In other words Assignment #4 & #5 are now due on February 16 and so still is Assignment #6! Those of you who got your stuff up early - feel proud! Those of you who still need to work on it - relax and go for it. :)

HOWEVER!! Those of you who got your assignment in on time - as in Friday, Februay 9th - will receive an extra credit point! Thus you could receive up to 11 points for each project. The rest of you can hope for a 10.

Again, some of you have put up html coding to display your graphics. TAKE IT OFF NOW!! I don't want to penalize you for your knowledge of html coding but that was NOT the assignment. Please go and change.

And speaking of designing for browsers..... Unfortunately this class site has started to make IE on Macintoshes crash. Well, first you should be viewing everything in Netscape (remember?) and second I have some work to do! I don't know how to change this but I will start this coming week so that all browsers on all machines can get this page. For now, use Netscape on your Macs.

Take care! -Margaret

February 9 - Howdy! Now here is a very important announcement about following class instructions:

I have done a little perusing of the websites and some of you have put up index pages when Assignment #5 expressly told you NOT to! Therefore, go NOW to your site and get rid of the index page!!!! If when grading we discover an Index page instead of the graphics and a directory you will get a 0 - NO DISCUSSION! We will do an index page LATER on in the semester. If you don't understand what I just wrote you are probably alright as you probably only loaded your graphics to your site. Good for you!! Now those of you eager people who put up indexes - GET THEM DOWN NOW!!!

Thanks :) - Margaret

February 8 - Hello! Here are a few things to know:

  1. When it comes to grading, wait AT LEAST one week from the due date as it takes quite a lot of time to grade, write comments, and then load the information to Oncourse.
  2. I have been getting questions about ftp and putting graphics on the web. You can use any ftp program you want. All ftp does is make sure your computer and the server understand each other and actually transfer your documents to the correct spot. If you are unsure about this process, read the documents I told you about before and try it again. There are a lot of little steps involved so please make sure you do them all and give yourself the time and patience to do it.
  3. BIG ONE TO REMEMBER! You must put your graphics and all other web documents in your public_html directory. If you don't, we won't be able to see it. I have made many mistakes by putting document in my email account, etc. Make sure your public_html directory is open.
Remember: You Can Do It!! -Margaret

February 5 - Hello! The countdown begins!! If you do NOT have your CS account working GET IT WORKING BY FRIDAY!! Why? Because from here on out you will be posting your work on the CS server and if you can't access it now you will forever be receiving zeros in the class. In Short, if you can't get access to the CS server I suggest you drop the class. Now is the time to get help during lab times, friends, UITS, classmates, ANYBODY who can help you get your stuff going.

Also, this week you must check the class roster. If your name, email address, and web address are all listed on the roster - GOOD! If not you MUST email me from your CS account so that I know what your CS address is and thus can put you on the roster. If you don't have your name on the roster by the end of this week, you will be seriously hurting for grades as we, Brian and I, will be unable to view and thus grade your work.

Fear not!! I know you all can do this! Hey, I did so I know anyone can. Have faith and take your time doing the steps mentioned in your lectures and on the notes on the site and you will do it. -Margaret

February 3 - Ok everyone TAKE A DEEP BREATH! You are about to embark on your first BIG assignment for this class: doing graphics and uploading them to the web. Whoa!! So here are some things I want you all to do in preparation:

  1. Read everything under Graphics in the Reading section. Please note that the first link will link you to some free graphics software. Andy uses PaintShopPro on the tape and you can download a trial version from a link on the page.
  2. You MUST save your graphics as either a .gif or a .jpeg. How do you know if you have saved it properly? Well when you load it onto the web you can click onto it and if you don't need to use a software program to open it, you did it right. If Brian has to use a software package to open your graphic, well, ya' get 0 points for it. Remember: .gif and .jpeg are all that I allow.
  3. Make sure to read the following found in FAQs & Notes under FAQs:
    • graphics_a.html
    • graphics_b.html
    • ip_a.html
    • ip_b.html
The above graphics readings will help you make graphics and the ip links will help you with ftp.
  4. I have changed the directions from what I originally wrote down for Assignments #4 & #5. Since I combined both STAIRS when I took this class, so can you. Call your combined STAIR stairgraphics.txt. I will change both assignments to reflect this so you might want to reread the assignments.
  5. When making a STAIR and thus making a text document, go into Notepad write out your STAIR and then save it as a .txt file. YOU MUST put in your own carriage returns (ie. hit the Return key before you go off the page when typing) 'cause if ya' don't you get a line of text that goes on forever and makes the grader surly 'cause it's harder to read.
  6. Yes, you may use any graphics program you want just as long as the graphgics are .gif or .jpeg.
NOW: Make note of your lab times!!! (quickfaqs.html under FAQs) You may need help with this one and you need to set aside time to ask for help during your lab time. Put lab times into your schedule NOW! If you have never worked with a graphics program before you will need time to familiarize yourself to one. Watch Andy carefully on the tapes as he demonstrates what you will need to know.

And know that you are now going to get a taste of creativity for this class. Hang onto it because you are going to use it a lot in the next few months. -Margaret

February 1 - HI! I am very impressed with you all right now. Thank you so much for your hard work. Keep this up and those of you who are working will get good grades!!!

Speaking of grades, give us about a week to grade and upload those grades for each project. That way you won't have to fear missing it. Thanks and I look forward to your next projects!!! -Margaret
