Hummingbird FTP
(Note that the following directions are for PCs and Window programs only. A Mac will work differently.
With a Mac you will use Fetch.)
The Hummingbird FTP - the FTP program on your IUWARE CD - is a wonderful FTP program. It automatically
sets the permissions for your files when you load them so you don't have to worry about setting
permissions. Now let's walk through Hummingbird FTP (Hftp) together.
Make sure you have Hftp loaded onto your computer. To do this, insert your IUWARE CD into your
computer's CD drive. Select the Communications programs and load them all onto your computer.
- Go to the Start button and select Programs, then Communication, then FTP, then FTP.
- The Hftp program will open and you will see a small window named Open Connection
in front of a window named FTP - (Untitled).
- In the Open Connection window you will see six long blank white lines with a smaller
line underneath them with UNIX in it.
- The first line has Server to the left of it. In this Server line type: phoenix.cs.iupui.edu
- In the User Name line, type your username (Hint: username is the name you use for your email).
- In the Password line, type in your password.
- You can leave the rest of the lines blank.
- Select the Open button.
- You will now see two small windows inside the FTP - (Untitled) window. The one in front
will have your phoenix email address in it. This window shows you the contents of your
space on the phoenix server. The one behind that will show the contents of
your hard drive on the computer that you are ftping from and will be called that.
- For ease of use, I suggest maximizing the FTP - (Untitled) window by clicking in the
full box in the upper right hand corner of the window. I then drag the smaller phoenix
window down so that both the phoenix and the computer window are completely shown.
- In the phoenix window, double-click on your public_html folder until it is open. You will
know this because the folder icon is open. This is the only place you can put your files
because if you put them anywhere else, you will not be able to view them on the Web.
- Now go to your computer window and in the drop box below the title bar select the drive your
work is on. For instance if your work is on a floppy disk you will select the a: drive by
clicking on the downward arrow and then highlighting a:. If it is on your hard drive, you will
select c:, and if it is on a zip or cd drive you will select the appropriate drive for that.
- In the left-hand side of your computer window you will see a list of your files. Select the
file you wish to load onto phoenix by highlighting it with your mouse (Yes! You can use a
mouse with this program!) and then dragging it into the left-hand side of the phoenix
window.
- You will then get a small box asking you if you really want to do this. Select yes.
- If you are reloading a document that is already on the site, it will ask you if you really
want to replace the existing one. Select yes if you are sure.
- Now Hftp will load your file.
- Voila! It is done! Go to your website and view your work to make sure that it is correct.
- Close ftp by clicking the X in the upper right hand corner.
A few more things to know:
- You can also use ftp to transfer files from the server to your computer or disk. Just reverse
the click and drag process.
- FTP can also do file management for you. If you want to delet a file on the phoenix server
highlight the file in the phoenix window and then select Delete under File in the menu bar.
- If you need to rename a file you can also do that from the File menu.
- If you want to load more than one document onto the phoenix server, select the first document
then hold down your Ctrl key and select the rest of the files you wish to transfer.
