| Preliminary Information
I am going to walk through using a telnet program
to access the ds9 server for email. Telnet will
also enable your to complete your homework for labs
5-10.
This is an outline using the telnet program on the
2000 IUWare. You may use other telnet programs
... the work on the same concept.
|
|
| Installation
You will need to install the Communications Software
aspect of IUWare. Once installed, you will find
"Communications Software 3.0" through Start
- Programs
|
 |
| Telnet Set-up
To set up your Telnet, you will need to open the
program. You can do this by Start - Programs
- Telnet - Telnet.
|
 |
| New Folder
You screen will look a bit different than this one.
I have already set up my new folder and new profile.
To set up yours ....
Select the New Folder button.
You will receive a window (below) prompting you for
a Folder Name. This is a descriptive name for
the server you will be accessing. I called mine
ds9. You may want to call it IUPUI ... DS9 ...
School, etc. After you type in a name, select
'okay'.
|
 |
| New Profile
You will return to the "Open Session" window.
Now highlight the folder name you just created and
then select "New Profile". You will
receive a window called "HostExplorer Session
Info".
Complete the needed information. The Profile Name
can be the same name as your folder ... again it should
be descriptive. The Profile Type is VT and the
Host Name (all small letters) is:
ds9.cs.iupui.edu
When finished, click on "OK".
|
 |
| Telnet To DS9
You must first be connected to the Internet.
You can use a Internet Service Provider or you may
use the PPP connection through IUPUI.
(See the PPP Installation on the IUWare. Also,
you will need to have a Cord account. Check
with the UITS Support ... there is a link on my main
page.)
Once you are connected to the Internet, open up Telnet.
This can be accomplished by Start - Programs - Communication
Software 3.0 - Telnet - Telnet - your new folder (for
me - it's ds9) - and then on the profile name (again,
for me - it's ds9).
Notice that when you select the profile name, the
'Connect' button is not 'visible'. Click on
Connect.
|
 |
| You're Connected
Your request for the Telnet Protocol is then sent
through the Internet. You will now receive a
screen indicating that you are connected to ds9.
It's not pretty, but it is very functional.
Also, your mouse no longer works. You must use
your keyboard.
|
 |
| Logging In
Your login consists of first initial and up to the
first seven letters of your last name. <Enter>
Your password is first initial, last four digits
of your student ID, first three letters of your last
name.
Everything is in lowercase - no commas.
|
|
| Changing Your Password
You will receive a prompt. At this prompt,
type:
passwd
You will be asked for a login (NIS) password.
This is your original password. Type this in
and type <enter>.
You will now be prompted to enter in a new password.
Do NOT use your dog's name, friends name, etc.
You want to use a combination of letters and numbers.
Use at least 7 letters and 2 numbers. You will
be asked to enter this in again for verification.
|
 |
| Email
We will be using an email program called Pine.
Again, your mouse does not work.
At the prompt, type: pine
You will get a one screen regarding copyright, etc.,
on Pine. After you have agreed to it, you will
get the basic Pine screen.
To navigate around, you will need to follow the commands
listed below. (FYI - ^ means the control key.)
Your arrow keys do work and are a great way to move
around the screen.
|
 |
| Existing from Telnet
When finished with your email, you will need to Quit
out of Pine.
Once you are back to the prompt, type Exit.
This will close you session.
