Hello students!! Here's your study guide. The test will be on Oncourse from 6 am. July 13 - 6 pm July 14, 2001. You must take the test within that timeframe or you will not receive a grade. I wrote the below questions with plenty of room for your answers should you print this out. Remember to please print this out at home and not in lab. What is STAIR? What do each of the letters stand for?

How would you use STAIR and why?

How did the Internet begin?

What is the main purpose of the Internet and the World Wide Web?

What is a search engine and how does it work? Please list examples of search engines.

Why is it hard to find information on the Web?

What is binary?

How do you count in binary? (Example: In decimal we count 1,2,3,4..... etc.)

What are protocols? What do protocols do? What do the following acronyms stand for: FTP; HTTP; Telnet; TCP/IP?

What are web browsers? How do web browsers work?

What are text editors? How do text editors work?

What are web editors? How do web editors work?

What does "web-ready" mean? Name some web graphics types that are "web-ready"?

What are the following Unix commands and what do they do: cd; chmod; mv; pwd?

What are permissions, why do we use them, why are they so important, and what is the permission setting on your CS account and why?
