Augmented Reality

This project aims to study new 3D interaction methods and algorithms using a multitude of techniques from computer graphics, computer vision, and virtual reality. Augmented reality (AR) is a technology in which a user's view of the real world is enhanced or augmented with additional information generated from a computer model. Using AR technology, users can interact with a combination of real and virtual objects in a natural way. This paradigm constitutes the core of a very promising new technology for many applications. However, before it can be applied successfully, AR has to fulfill very strong requirements including precise calibration, registration and tracking of sensors and objects in the scene, as well as a detailed overall understanding of the scene.

Realistic merging of virtual objects with a real scene requires that objects behave in physically plausible manners when they are manipulated, i.e., they occlude or are occluded by real objects, they are not able to move through other objects, and they are shadowed or indirectly illuminated by other objects while also casting shadows themselves. To enforce such physical interaction constraints between real and virtual objects, the AR-system needs to have a very detailed description of the physical scene.

There may be many useful applications of this technology. Just as the personal computer has changed the daily routine of the average office worker, computer technology will, in the future, very likely create even more dramatic changes in the construction, design and manufacturing industries. Some applications of this technology are mechanical repair and diagnosis assistant, interior decoration, computer aided surgery in which preoperative images are overlaid on the real scene, industrial plant maintenance of manufacturing plants, manufacturing assembly tasks, etc. Companies such as Siemens Corporate Research (with whom our Department has ongoing collaboration) and Boeing have invested or are continuing to invest in this technology. http://www.cs.iupui.edu/~tuceryan/
