General Admission Requirements for the Masters of Science Program

The applicant to the graduate program must have a four-year bachelor's degree or equivalent. Interested students with 3-year degree should contact the department for information.

The applicant's record should exhibit outstanding achievement as indicated by the grade point average for each degree over his or her entire academic record. An applicant is expected to have a GPA of at least a 3.0 on a scale of 4.0. The record should also demonstrate strong individual accomplishments and recommendations from independent references.

Various forms of financial aid including research and teaching assistantships, and university and school fellowships, are available on a competitive basis. Applicants who are seeking financial aid must submit their scores on the General Aptitude Test of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Students are encouraged to submit scores on the Computer Science Subject Test of the GRE.

Applicants who do not have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field may be required to take prerequisite courses and pass with a grade of B+ or higher.

All applicants whose native language is not English must submit scores for TOEFL. Requirement is a 600 score for paper-based and 250 for the computer-based test. Students submitting TOEFL iBT must have minimum scores of: Reading (19), Listening (14), Speaking (18), and Writing (18). An overall TOEFL i BT score of 77 is required. An IELTS band score of 6.5 is also acceptable. Potential applicants with questions are advised to contact a graduate advisor by calling 317-274-9727.

Deadlines for application to the graduate program are as follows:

  • FALL semester with priority consideration for financial aid JANUARY 15
  • FALL semester with limited financial consideration MAY 1 (firm)
  • SPRING semester with limited financial consideration SEPTEMBER 15

  2. Complete the following items and mail them to the Department of Computer and Information Science:
  • Official transcripts and evidence of degrees awarded (with English translation, if necessary). Students with provisional certificates must present the original certificate as well as a letter from their institution indicating that bachelor degree requirements have been completed and the date that an official diploma will be available. These must be presented to the Department in order to complete the admission process. Students with provisional certificates must present the original diploma for verification during their first semester of enrollment in the Master of Science program. Prospective students who do not follow these steps will have their admission delayed. This is of particular importance for international students, and we encourage you to submit this letter with your other application materials. Please consult with Department representatives with questions on these requirements.

  • Statement of purpose
  • Copies of TOEFL or IELTS reports, if appropriate
    • IELTS Band Score Requirement: 6.5
    • TOEFL Paper-Based Test Requirement: 550
    • TOEFL Internet-Based Test Requirement: Overall 77 minimum with scores no less than:
      Writing and Speaking: 18 each,
      Listening: 14,
      Reading: 19.
    • TOEFL Computer-Based Test Requirement: 213
  • GRE score, if seeking financial aid
