Certificate in Applied Computer Science

Overview

The certificate program introduces computer science principles, develops practical skills in market-driven software applications and prepares students to be successful with emerging technologies. The program is designed to supplement and enhance a primary degree program. It serves current IUPUI students and returning adults who are interested in gaining knowledge and skills in computing applications. Those who earn the certificate will have demonstrated that they have the core competencies necessary for entry-level positions in information technology. They will have the ability to solve complex problems, design and implement algorithms, apply computer science theory to practical problems, adapt to technological change and to program in at least two languages.

The certificate of applied computer science is a perfect companion for students in other degree programs. For example, liberal arts students can earn a certificate of applied computer science without adding time or credit hours to their degree process. Students in liberal arts and other degree programs who are interested in the certificate are encouraged to visit an advisor to work out a plan of study.

What you will gain

  1. Ability to compete and be successful in the local and global marketplace
  2. Problem solving knowledge and skills that are applicable long term and are not technology specific
  3. Understanding of fundamental computer science principles
  4. Expanded career opportunities

Employment

Students who earn the certificate will have demonstrated they have the core competencies necessary for entry-level positions in information technology. These skills include the ability to solve complex problems, design and implement algorithms, apply computer science theory to practical problems, adapt to technological change, and program in at least two languages. Entry-level employment opportunities include:

  1. Database Development
  2. Visual Basic Development
  3. World Wide Web Development
  4. Webmaster
  5. Multimedia Development
  6. System Administration
  7. Programmer Specialists
  8. Help Desk Technical Support

The foundation of the program

The curriculum and the instruction are guided by four major principles:

  1. Advanced problem solving
  2. Algorithm design and implementation
  3. Concepts and skills in multiple programming languages
  4. Transfer of theory and skills to new technical environments

How you get the actual certificate

During registration for the semester where completion of the certificate is intended, students should register for CAND 99100. CAND 99100 is a 0 credit hour course which notifies the CS Department of students intent to complete the certificate program which generates a 'final degree audit'. Students should apply for graduation in the semester before their last in order to ensure adequate time for graduation audit processing. Students apply for graduation in the deans office LD 222.

Becoming a Student

Current IUPUI Undergraduate students may apply directly to the program. all other students must be admitted to IUPUI through the Undergraduate Admissions Office. The IUPUI application is available online at http://www.iupui.edu/apply/. To enroll in this program, students must be formally admitted by the Office of Admissions on the IUPUI campus. Applications for admission to the Certificate in Applied Computer Science program are available in the offices of the Dean of the School of Science or the Department of Computer and Information Science. Credit may be given for applicable courses taken at other colleges or universities. Consult an academic advisor for details.
